Lord God Adonai, there is so much I don’t know.
I know nothing next to what you know.
I don’t know what my future holds.
I don’t even know what tomorrow—
or the next five minutes—holds.
But I know that you love me.
I know that you love the church.
I know that you love the world.
I know your plans for me are good.
I know your power is unlimited
and your love is unconditional.
And so, step by step, and moment by moment,
help me to trust you,
to be courageous and full of faith,
to boldly embrace uncertainty,
and to rely on you for whatever results,
in Jesus’ name. Amen.
“I love this prayer and the humility it invokes and the confidence it instills. Perhaps the uncertainty of what the future holds is the most difficult burden of this pandemic. There are so many unanswered questions. When will the church reopen? What will school be like in the fall? When can I visit my loved ones again? How will this ever be normal?
Instead of spinning our wheels trying to answer these questions, this prayer invites us to refocus our attention to the things we know to be true about God. Naming the things we do know about ourselves and our God recenters us. With our world put into a perspective by the knowledge that we are the beloved creation of a good God, we face our surroundings with a certain confidence and serenity – internal peace in spite of external chaos.
I hope that this prayer would be a blessing to you amid the uncertainty of the times in which we find ourselves. May the love of God transform your fear into faith.”
